Carbon markets are an effective and mature financing mechanism for mitigating climate change. While acknowledging valid criticisms, we contend that the current critique regarding their inability to support farmers in transitioning to regenerative agriculture is misplaced.
Carbon Markets – A Solid Foundation for the Regenerative Agriculture Transition
We agree that this transition requires more robust support, but carbon markets, while not a complete solution, can serve as a foundational model for new mechanisms to unlock wider sustainability benefits.
Carbon markets are the most mature and transparent financing tool available to support climate-positive farming. Imperfect as they are, they remain an indispensable pillar of a blended financing model for regenerative agriculture. Jettisoning them now would mean abandoning a generation of farmers — on whom we all depend — just as momentum for the regenerative transition is building.
Just Like Nature – Carbon Markets Evolve Over Time
Carbon markets need improvements. Fortunately, the existing carbon market frameworks already have mechanisms in place for constantly improving methodologies incorporating public comments from various stakeholders including scientists, project developers, MRV providers, and others. Carbon markets are not static: they are evolving.
They are a foundation and blueprint for enabling and supporting farmers and ecosystems in the transition. Yes, we must still reform and refine, and also expand carbon markets to better reflect the complexity of regenerative systems.
An Open Invitation
As practitioners in agricultural carbon markets, we stand for practical, scalable climate solutions grounded in both scientific integrity and farmer wisdom.
We are committed to reforming carbon markets to reflect regenerative complexity, without compromising their credibility, transparency, and financing capacity.
Let's improve the system together, through shared evidence and data, better tools and honest debate.
