About ISCIA

Who we are

The International Soil Carbon Industry Alliance unites experts to deliver credible CO₂ removals in agriculture at scale.

Our Mission

Uniting the soil carbon industry

ISCIA was founded on the belief that the soil carbon industry is stronger together. By bringing together practitioners, scientists, standard-setters, and market participants under one roof, we create the conditions for a credible, scalable, and farmer-friendly soil carbon market.

Empowering the sustainable growth of the soil carbon market, ISCIA champions regenerative agriculture, fortifies trust in soil organic carbon (SOC) for credible climate outcomes, and advances education to ensure fair compensation and a resilient future for farmers and our planet.

In line with our commitment to cooperation over rivalry, we firmly hold the belief that the unity of our industry is essential for us to collaboratively address the climate crisis.

Core Beliefs

What we stand for

Soil carbon is a credible climate solution

When measured rigorously and verified independently, soil organic carbon sequestration represents a meaningful, nature-based pathway to address climate change while supporting agricultural livelihoods.

Farmers must be fairly compensated

The people who steward the land are central to the soil carbon opportunity. ISCIA advocates for market structures and policy frameworks that ensure farmers receive equitable returns for their environmental stewardship.

Science and data must drive decisions

Credibility in the soil carbon market depends on robust measurement, reporting, and verification. ISCIA promotes science-based standards and data-driven approaches across all aspects of the industry.

Collaboration over competition

The challenges facing the soil carbon industry — regulatory uncertainty, measurement complexity, buyer hesitancy — are best addressed collectively. ISCIA creates a trusted space for open dialogue and joint action.

Diversity and inclusion strengthen outcomes

ISCIA recognises the wide range of participants necessary to achieve its goals. We draw on all knowledge, experiences, and cultures, and embrace inclusive excellence.

Policy engagement is essential

Effective policy frameworks are critical to unlocking the full potential of soil carbon markets. ISCIA actively engages with regulators, standard bodies, and policymakers to shape a supportive environment for the industry.

Our Story

How ISCIA came to be

ISCIA was established by a group of pioneering soil carbon organisations who recognised that fragmentation was holding the industry back. Competing on measurement methodologies, engaging separately with policymakers, and duplicating market development efforts was costly for everyone — and ultimately for the climate.

Incorporated as a not-for-profit society under the Alberta Societies Act, Canada, ISCIA operates as a member-driven alliance. Our governance is designed to be lean, transparent, and focused on outcomes — not bureaucracy.

Today, ISCIA convenes leading organisations from across the globe, running two active committees — Science, Policy & Standards and Market Growth & Development — alongside specialised working groups that tackle the industry's most pressing challenges.

Legal Status

ISCIA is a registered not-for-profit society (CAN: 5026342211) operating under the Alberta Societies Act, Canada. Our governance is designed to be lean, transparent, and focused on outcomes — not bureaucracy.
